DNA - Nature Magazine

Another illustration for a feature in Nature magazine was published yesterday, the article explored how humans have evolved through a combination of changes in, and inheritance of DNA but also through the inheritance of culture and behaviours passed down through the generations just like DNA. 

I produced these three roughs to explain the the concepts in the article...


It's a bit hard to see at this scale but the double helix includes objects to represent  cultural heritage, ie, farming/ religion/ arts etc etc


This one (below) shows culture evolving through cave wall/ stone tablet/ paper/ computer print right up to the iphone, with a double helix represented on each.



They decided to go ahead with the middle piece - here's the final artwork...



I really want to explore more repeat pattern in my work, and this commission was a great chance to indulge!
